My Favorite Holiday

Halloween is, and always has been, my favorite secular holiday (even more than Armistice Day or Arbor Day!). Why, you ask? Two words: sugar and costumes. Few human celebrations have the potential to bring us closer to our existential base natures--for during this fiesta of the macabre we get tripped up on candy and parade around in fanciful facades! All Hallow's Eve '06 delivered on all of these crucial elements. Watch yourselves, Halloween haterz... Do you realize who you're messing with? The bonafide crypts and bloods! Not to mention vampires, werewolves, pirates, witches, ghosts, nerds, and ironing boards...

Meghan and I dressed up as Jim and Pam from the Halloween episode of The Office. Folks either got our costume or they didn't. The most common guesses amongst the ignorant about my costume were a domino, a musical scale, and a polka-dotted man...

Katie and Will made quite the nerdy team. Let's leave the rumors that this photo spawned for another occasion, shall we?

"Who ya gonna call?" Shirley and Rachel, of course.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Heidi and Molly. Props on the costume sewing skills!

Swag was none other than fellow wardie Shirley Escobar through the power of her trademark glasses, apron, oven mitt, and missionary copy of the Book of Mormon.

The pumpkins Meghan and I carved. I was a typical former geography major and fashioned the gourd's features from political boundaries dear to me. The eyes are Michigan and Utah. The nose is Ecuador. The mouth is Virginia. Meghan went with a more traditional "normal" look for her jack o' lantern. I guess it's a personality test of some kind... We toasted the seeds afterwards. Tasty!

Mom showed off her mad domestic skillz by creating this haunted chocolate gingerbread house complete with a brownie graveyard and an internal fog mechanism.

Megs has nice teeth. But this juxtaposition really isn't needed to underscore that fact.

This is why Katie Deibel should be kept away from sharp objects when she's in the presence of rotting gourds...

Baby Emma was a CareBear. Ain't she darling?

To Wong, From America

This is Wong (more or less). He does not play into the many Wong stereotypes.

He is not a Chinese restauranteur.

He is not a detective.

Nor is he a deified Kung Fu master.

He is a driver.

And he's been doing it for a long time...

Wong recently ended his employment for the ex-patriot Deibel family in Shanghai, so we took these pictures to show him great university founded for glorious honor of revolutionary hero Brigham Young...

Great indigenous peasant leader Massasoit honored for work with the people's agriculture.

Katie gets special classroom at university...

Just Police Beat It

Every Thursday the Police Beat in The Daily Universe never ceases to amuse me. Our fair university is rife with gross disorder and wanton disregard for the law! I therefore present to you the best of law and order, Provo style.

Criminal Mischief
Nov. 4- Three vehicles in a Heritage Halls parking lot were vandalized using ketchup, mayonnaise, hot dogs, salad dressing and tomatoes. The vandals used ketchup to write vulgar messages on the hoods of the cars.

Assault
Oct. 23: An assault was reported in R Hall of Deseret Towers. One male student threw a bug on another male student who retaliated by spraying shaving cream on the male that threw the bug. Shaving cream got in the eyes of the first student and the argument quickly escalated and became a physical confrontation.

Communications Violation
Oct. 25: An employee in the Widtsoe Building reported receiving a suspicious telephone call. The female employee reported a male calling and rambling about Mormons and his alcohol abuse problem.

Criminal Mischief
Oct. 13: Officers responded to the report of a suspicious briefcase in the Eyring Science Center. Upon investigation officers found someone had simply misplaced their briefcase.

Nuisance
Oct. 13: A student reported two male students throwing acorns off the bridge near the law building on East Campus Drive, hitting another student. When questioned, the male students said they were throwing acorns into the tops of trees to see the reactions of students who thought animals were making the noises in the trees. The students were asked to stop throwing acorns.

Theft
Oct. 13: A student reported cash stolen. The student sent a letter containing cash to Eastern Europe. When the letter arrived at its destination the cash previously put in the envelope was missing.

La fiesta de la calabaza

Glory be! Look at all of those pumpkin-related foodstuffs! Happy birthday, Renny!

This was my contribution to the party, pumpkin swirl cheesecake. Mad skills being manifest, my friends! Get the recipe here. It must have been good, because it was consumed faster than a steer in pirahna-infested Amazonian waters...

One Wicked© Party

Joseph and I finally made good on our schemes this summer to throw a Wicked© party. Meghan and I made sugar cookies for the event. Nevertheless, we realized that we had no Halloween cookie cutters... So, angels became ghosts and KKK riders and gingerbread men became Ninja Turtles!

Internal Medicine

This is Meghan receiving her weekly dose of radiation therapy to suppress her mutant X-genes... Okay, so it's really just a HIDA scan, but they did inject her with radioactive isotopes! Even though they weren't successful introducing the IV until the fifth attempt...

A Sunday Drive

Last Sabbath Meghan and I headed for the hills to take on the über scenic Mt. Nebo Loop in this illustrious season known as "Fall" to mark one glorious month of dating.

The leaves they are-a-changin'. Mother Nature's palette has a particular affinity for yellows, reds, oranges, and DEATH.

This is Meghan with an ENORMOUS HEADLESS COW behind her!

From this vista you can see all of Utah Valley. Long live Vernor's ginger ale!

A clouded yet majestic Mt. Nebo. Kind of makes you want to turn pagan, doesn't it?

Farshin' and Campin'

Last weekend Swag, Pilk, Katie Coleman, and I decided to head out into the great outdoors for some good ol' fashioned "freeze your tail off and catch some lunkers" at Strawberry Reservoir. In actuality, only Pilk froze his tail off. The rest of us were rather toasty in our mummy bags despite the lack of a tent. Swag had brought two tents, but one smelled like puke and the other didn't have the proper poles to accompany it...

We ended up catching 11 fish but only kept 7--just one short of our limit! Nothing beats mallows and worms at Renegade!

The Kokanee Salmon are currently spawning upriver this time of year. One fella was all spent and was resting mostly out of the water. So Swag grabbed him for a quick snapshot.

This is Murdock. He was a fiesty cutthroat that met his match. Check out the size of this fish! He's as long as the width of my body! What a lunker!

We gutted and filleted them in preparation for...

...A fish fry of the grandest order! Sauteed with some butter and a seasoned with a healthy dash of Old Bay, fresh trout filets couldn't be beat! Man triumphs over fish--again.

I Pity The Fool! (That Missed The Series Premiere)

Last night was the first episode of Mr. T's new "Reali-T" series I Pity the Fool. It is without question that it delivered the good ol' tough-talking but lovable Mr. T we've always known. Mr. T successfully brought together a car dealership through the power of motivation. I therefore present to you the best quotes from this historic first episode.

"You know what I do to couch potatoes? I mash 'em up!"

"I had to get to Nemet Motors fast."

"But at Nemet motors, family feuds weren't the only knock in the engine."

"Thirty-five dollars? You gonna lose a deal for thirty-five dollars? That's CHUMP CHANGE! My lunch is thirty-five dollars!"

"But T never asks anybody to do something he wouldn't do himself. So first I got myself a fancy car salesman suit. Then I got on the phone to some potential customers."

"I had to teach the dealers my golden rule: Sell unto others as you would have them sell unto you."

"What about trunk space?" "I'm glad you asked that. I'm gonna show you how big it is. I'm gonna get in the trunk myself. See how big it is?"

"You know, I liked you from the moment I saw you on The A-Team."

"If you just tuned in, what's your problem Fool? Show me some respect, and watch my show from the beginning!"

"Don't beat the customer, treat the customer."

"It was like Scott was trying to drive with the parking brake on--a parking brake named Tom Nemet."

"Two things were workin': the windshield wipers on Scott's eyes, and the radiator in Mr. Nemet's heart. If you want to polish a relationship and make it glisten, all you really have to do is learn to listen."

"It was time to hit the nitrous, burn rubber, put the pedal to the metal, and get in the passing lane!"

"Cars was movin', deals was being made."

"Like I always say, you can't spell success without T."

"Helping people gives me a real sense of accomplishment, and I like to explain that feeling in rhyme and verse.

I came to Nemet Motors, down in New York City.
A place full of cars, and fools to pity.
Problem after problem, a messy situation.
The biggest of 'em all: a lack of motivation.
T took care of bidness, and others played their parts.
Not just sellin' cars, but touchin' people's hearts."

Pigs in Blankets!

When it comes to tastiness, value, and ease of manufacture, pigs in blankets can't be beat! FYI-If you're looking to impress Katie Deibel, whip up a pen or two! For added brownie points, use baked beans and applesauce as sides and blue Kool-Aid as your beverage.

Papabukranrazzi

Zander got a new camera phone the other day and has since been rather prolific chronicling my everyday life. This is me in repose while brushing my teeth. Beware! No one is safe from his menacing lens!

Baby Fauxhawk!

I know it's hard to see with the brown brick in the background, but Li'l Emma is taking after her Uncle Buck and choosing a hip hairdo literally within weeks of birth! I couldn't be prouder...

One Smith's Inventory Is Another Bird's Doom

Quite the find! What earthly treasure has more sway than a birdicidal cat marauding as an actual bird house!
